PhD Class & Symposium 2023
The PhD Association of the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research and NERF organize an annual PhD Class and Symposium to increase networking and support first-year PhD students.
This year (October 2023), twenty-three new PhD students from both centers came together for PhD Class, where they got to know the different labs' specific research and expertise and, of course, each other. Group leaders and core experts explained their work in different sessions.
The PhD Symposium took place a few weeks later, in which all PhD students from both centers had the chance to participate. In between talks of invited speakers and PhD students, guests were able to grab a coffee and listen to fellow passionate PhD researchers in poster sessions. This year, the Symposium ended with keynote speaker Prof Dr. Sara Vieira-Silva, with a talk titled: ‘Quantitative approaches to microbiome ecology: towards personalized medicine’.

PhD Class & Symposium 2022
In last year's edition (2022), out of 52 poster presentations, Joffré Verniers, PhD student in the Switch lab, took home the best poster award. Congratulations!
In addition, there was room for social activities to boost team spirit. The students got to show off their creative side and performed adapted versions of popular songs. Many hits were performed, but the adaptation of "Call me Maybe" to "Go back to the lab, baby" was a clear winner.
To end the symposium, keynote speaker Fatima AlZahra'a Alatraktchi (Roskilde Universitet, Denmark) impressed everyone with her talk and work on "Biosensors – in sickness and in health."
